摘要:

The lateral separation of the two eyes creates slight image differences that provide both position and motion cues that can be used to extract information about depth in the world. This presentation will review recent work on how disparity and binocular motion cues are processed in human visual cortex. Using a combination of fMRI and EEG source-localization we find that cortical responses to the disparity cue depend strongly on the orientation of the disparity, being much larger for horizontal than for vertical disparities in adults, but not infants.  Disparity responses are also strongly dependent on the presence of references in adults but not infants. These reference-dependent responses become increasingly strong going from area V1 to V3, suggesting the presence of strong immaturities in infant extra-striate visual areas.   In other work, we compared motion-in-depth responses generated by two different cues – changing disparity over time (CDOT) and inter-ocular velocities differences (IOVD).  The CDOT cue is readily linked to perceptual motion in depth, but the IOVD response is not.  Taken together, our results suggest a hierarchy of cue-sensitivity and processing strategy for binocular disparity and binocular motion cues.
