The brain contains topological maps of visual space, sounds, body parts, and movements. For more than two decades, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been used to reveal a portion of these maps in humans. The overall goal of this project is to construct a comprehensive functional atlas containing layers of surface-based visual and sensorimotor maps acquired from a healthy population. In carrying out this project, novel techniques and methods will be developed, including wearable technology for multisensory stimulation, computational fMRI data analysis, and visualization of brain maps. Once established, these maps will be made available on online brain databases (local and international sites) with platforms similar to “Google Earth” or “Google Maps.” This normative atlas can be used by other cognitive and clinical researchers as a guide (reference) map for studying brain functions, such as attention, perception, learning, memory, language, movement, and action, in neurotypical populations and atypical populations with developmental, neurological, or neurodegenerative disorders.
