A study in Zhou’s lab revealed an interaction between value and perceptual salience in the allocation of attention. Previous researchers argued for a combined force of value and perceptual salience in determining attentional priority, but they only varied the magnitude of value while kept perceptual salience constant such that the role of perceptual salience was not considered. By independently manipulating value and perceptual salience, the study from Zhou’s group demonstrated that value and perceptual salience interacts to modulate attentional priority.
