Zhuan Zhou’s lab is interested in mechanisms of how intracellular Ca is regulated in single cell level by advanced methods including biophysics (patch-clamp, CFE amperometry, confocal, multi-photon, TIRFM, optogenetics, EM), biochemistry and molecular biology. They investigate mechanisms of neurotransmitter, in particular catecholamines (dopamine, noradrenalin, serotonin), release from soma (or synapse) of single cells (DRG neuron, astrocyte, chromaffin cell), brain slices (dopamine neurons, locus coeruleus, Me5) or living rat/mouse brains (striatum, SNc/VTA, hippocampus) using animal disease models (PD, HD, schizophrenia, cocaine/ nicotine-addiction). They also study mechanisms of endocytosis. They develop /modifying biophysical technologies (probes, preparations, assay methods) for secretion, ion channels, Ca homeostasis and imaging. Their goal is to discover novel mechanisms of cell secretion in healthy and diseases conditions.
